Procedure FAQs

Q. What medicines can I take the morning of my procedure?

A. This is listed on your prepping instructions. You are allowed to take blood pressure, heart or seizure medications unless instructed otherwise by our physician or your primary care physician.


Q. What about my medication the day prior to my procedure?

A. You can take all medications you have been prescribed EXCEPT blood thinner such as Aspirin, Coumadin or Plavix. You should have received instructions on when these medications were to be stopped. If you have not been instructed to stop these medications, please call our office immediately.


Q. What if I forgot to stop my blood thinners?

A. You will need to call our office and reschedule your procedure.


Q. Can I have my pain medication the morning of my test?

A. Yes.


Q. Can I have over-the-counter medicaions with my colon prep?

A. These are all right to take except for Vitamin E, ibuprofen or iron supplements.


Q. What do I do about my diabetic medications?

A. If you take oral medication (pills), we ask that you not take it the day you are prepping or the day of your procedure. We also ask that you discuss this with the physician who prescribed the medications. If you take insulin, you should talk with the physician who prescribed the insulin so he/she can adjust your dosing accordingly for the day of the prep and the day of the procedure.


Q. Can you give me something for nerves/anxiety?

A. No, we cannot give anything for anxiety before the test. The medications used for sedation will help with any anxiety you may be feeling.


Q. Does my driver have to stay during the procedure?

A. Yes, your driver must be present before you are taken back for your procedure, must be in the waiting room during the procedure and be there ready when you are discharged. YOU MAY NOT BE DROPPED OFF AND PICKED UP.


Q. What will be used in sedation?

A. Propofol or other medication by an anesthesiologist


Q. How long does the procedure take?

A. You should plan to be here approximately four hours. This includes wait time, procedure time, recovery time and discharge. Although we strive to make your wait time as little as possible, occasional emergencies do arise that may affect your total time in our facility.


Q. Can I go to work the day of my procedure?

A. No. You cannot work, drive, or make any important person or business decisions the day of the procedure.


Q. What clear liquids are allowed?

A. The definition of a clear liquid is “anything you can see through when you hold the liquid up to a light.” This includes tea, black coffee, soft drinks. You can also have popsicles (yellow or green), Jell‐O (yellow or green) and bullion soup. Milk, orange juice and “cream” soups are NOT considered to be clear liquids.


Q. Can I have alcohol while I am doing my colon prep?

A. No, you may not have alcohol while you are doing your prep or the day of the procedure.


Q. Do I have to drink all of my colon prep?

A. Yes, we want your colon as clean as possible so that your doctor can see all of the colon.


Q. What if I start vomiting after drinking the solution?

A. Wait 1‐2 hours and let your stomach settle. Start drinking the solution again, but drink it slowly. Instead of every 10-15 minutes, drink every 20 to 30 minutes. This will take longer, but will hopefully keep you from vomiting the rest of the solution. If vomiting continues, call our office and get instructions from the physician.


Q. What happens if I do not start having a bowel movement after drinking the solution?

A. If it has been longer than four hours since drinking the solution, call our office. If it is after hours, you will reach the answering service by dialing our number. The physician on call will be notified and can give your further instructions.


Q. What if my hemorrhoids begin to bleed during the prep?

A. If you are having a very small amount of bleeding, try to finish the prep so your procedure can still be performed. If you are having a large amount of bleeding, stop your prep and call our office or go to the emergency room.


Q. Can I wear my jewerly? 

A. Please do not wear jewelry to your procedure and remove all body piercings as well.


Q. When will I know the results of my procedure?

A. Your physician will speak to your driver about the finding of the procedure immediately after the procedure is finished. The physician speaks to the driver because the medication we use for sedation has an amnesia effect and you may not remember what you were told. If there were biopsies obtained during the procedure, the results normally are back in ten days.


Q. Will there be any pain after the procdure?

A. No, there should not be any pain after the procedure. You may feel some discomfort that feels like gas pains.


Q. When can I return to work?

A. You will be able to return to work the following day after your procedure.


Office FAQs

Q. How do I make an appointment?

A. Call the office and speak to one of the staff members, email via the website or stop by the office and schedule an appointment.


Q. Where is the Office located?

A. 1105 Eagletree Lane SE.


Q. Where do I park at the Office?

A. There is a large parking lot (free of charge) on either size of the building.


Q. What do I need to bring with me to the Office Appointment?

A. Bring Insurance Cards, Copay (if applicable), Picture ID, Current List of Medications & Drug Allergies, recent test results and lab results.


Q. What paperwork do I need to fill out?

A. For new patients, there is a packet that can be downloaded online or please arrive 15 minutes prior to appointment to complete the paperwork.  For returning patients, 2 forms are needed every time you visit (Symptom sheet & update medication sheet).


Q. I have received bloodwork, other GI procedures, X-rays, CT Scan, what do I need to do about those records?

A. You will need to sign a records release at the facilities where the test(s) were performed or come into our office in advance to sign a records release and we will request the records.


Q. How do I request a copy of my medical records?

A. Come into the office and sign a records release, it will need to be signed by the patient or download a form online and bring into the office.


Q. If I am an existing patient, do I need to fill out any paperwork?

A. Yes, we will need a symptom sheet and update current list of medications.


Q. What insurance is accepted at Alabama Colon & Gastro?

A. Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, Aetna, Multiplan, Healthspring, Medicare & Medicaid


Q. What if I need to change my appointment?

A.  Please call the office at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule to avoid the $25 fee.


Q. What if I miss my appointment?

A. Please call the office to re-schedule the appointment.  A fee of $25 may be charged for missed appointments.
